SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER 2020

Dear All

Drainage work continues round the church and I understand everything is going well. Our Ecologist visited the site towards the end of August to brief the builders about the measures to be taken to protect the three species of bats we have in residence; these will be needed when the work moves on to the North Chancel roof, the tower and the small room above the porch. The Friends will be buying bat boxes to put up on trees in the churchyard to provide alternative roosts for the bats while work continues.

We have received our License from North Norfolk District Council to run the Friends 100 club: however, we still need about 30 more members to call it a 100 club! Please encourage any family and friends who might like to support to become members. Our aim is to launch in October. As a reminder, if anyone would like to join, the cost is £1.00 per month, paid 12 months in advance. You will be allocated a number (or numbers if they would like multiple chances), and on the first of each month three winning numbers will be drawn. First prize is £25, second £10, third £5. Please send a cheque for £12 (or £24 or whatever multiple chosen), made payable to Friends of All Saints Gresham, to Helen Hunter (Vice Chair and Treasurer of The Friends), at “The Saltings” Holt Road, GRESHAM, NR11 8AD and include the name, address and email address. Winners will receive their cheques through the post. Everyone is eligible to join.

Finally, this month, I would like to pay tribute to the wonderful support the Friends and many other Gresham villagers have received from the Revd. Ruth, Interim Priest-in-Charge, who is to retire on September 25th. For The Friends, from our launch in January 2018, she (then Curate) has been a constant source of encouragement and help. All Saints Church Gresham would not be undergoing restoration without her initiative and drive. Consistently positive, she has attended most of our fundraising events and has always offered solutions when we faced difficulties. I will say a little more on this subject at the event mentioned below. We wish Ruth, together with Hugh, a long and happy retirement.

In order to say thank you in person, we are holding a small socially distanced event, when The Friends will lead a Vote of Thanks and make a small presentation, at Gresham Park on Tuesday 22nd September from 3-4.00pm. Cold drinks will be available in beakers, and there will be nibbles; everything used will be disposable. Numbers will be strictly limited in line with Covid restrictions. Hand Sanitisers will be provided, masks should be worn. This will be an occasion for sharing memories of and with Ruth, as Curate and then, for the last twelve months, Priest-in-charge. If you wish to attend, please tel. me on 01263 577794 to book your place. If you come, please bring a chair if you need one. Let us hope the weather is kind!

Best wishes

Julia Drury, Chair,The Friends of All Saints Gresham
